Republican Sen. David Vitter vowed Monday to block President Obama’s nominee for Labor secretary, citing a past run-in with his state of Louisiana as well as the nominee’s role in the controversial voter intimidation case involving the New Black Panther Party.

The president on Monday tapped Justice Department official Thomas Perez for the Labor post. The candidate, though, was already being questioned over a newly released report that found he gave incomplete testimony on the decision to drop charges against members of the new Black Panthers. Funny business in Philly: GOP officials booted, Black Panthers return — and Obama at polling site? – Fox News

Operators of a Philadelphia polling place have been ordered by a judge to cover up a mural of President Obama that is emblazoned on a wall behind the voting machines.

The mural was being covered by voter instruction posters — after Republicans voiced concerns that the painting could influence voters.

The mural, apparently at a school being used as a polling site in Ward 35, contained the words “change!” and “hope,” along with a quote from the president and painting of him.

Republicans quickly drew attention to the image Tuesday morning, with one  Mitt Romney spokesman tweeting: “Voters in Philly’s Ward 35 are being forced to  cast their ballots next to this.” [Read more...]

They may be back in black for Tuesday’s election – the uber-controversial New Black Panther Party.

But now with 100 percent less nightstick.

You’ll recall, especially if you’ve ever listened to conservative talk radio, that it was right here that the Election Day 2008 appearance of two local leaders of the smallish black-power posse outside a polling station at 12th and Fairmount in North Philadelphia – one brandishing a large nightstick – became a national controversy. Federal Court finds Obama appointees interfered with New Black Panther prosecution – WashingtonExaminer.com

A federal court in Washington, DC, held last week that political appointees appointed by President Obama did interfere with the Department of Justice’s prosecution of the New Black Panther Party.

The ruling came as part of a motion by the conservative legal watch dog group Judicial Watch, who had sued the DOJ in federal court to enforce a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for documents pertaining to the the New Black Panthers case. Judicial Watch had secured many previously unavailable documents through their suit against DOJ and were now suing for attorneys’ fees [continue reading in new window...]
