If Dick Harpootlian were a Republican, liberals would be jumping over one another to call him a bigot. In 2002 Harpootlian called Lindsey Graham, then running for a South Carolina Senate seat, “light in the loafers,” thus fueling a nasty whispering campaign about Graham’s sexual orientation. A week ago, I noted a smart essay in the AV Club on the fact that white film critics, afraid of being called “racist,” have long watered down their criticisms of Tyler Perry. The stakes in that case were relatively low: film criticism is, after all, just film criticism. Don’t get me wrong, I love dabbling in the form. If I had to write about politics all the time, I’d go insane (for reasons you’ll see tout de suite). And it’s important to note that we lose some indefinable-but-important thing as a society when we are afraid to address certain issues. The public square becomes intellectually impoverished, even if it’s over something as trivial as the ability to say “Tyler Perry sucks, and hard,” over fear of an idiotic backlash whipped up by grievance-mongers looking to slake their thirst for a daily outrage. State Rep. Joe Mitchell, D-Mobile, had an outlandish exchange via email with a Jefferson County man who asked him and other lawmakers not to pass any laws that would restrict gun ownership.

(CNSNews.com) – The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) wants its white VISTA volunteers who work with low-income, racially diverse public schools to examine the “privilege” their Caucasian race confers on them.
DPI devotes an entire Web page to “Power and Privilege,” including links to racial justice workshops and online tests where VISTA volunteers can “learn about your personal bias.” [Read more...]
Mission Viejo Elementary Principal Andre Pearson
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – A school principal said no white children were allowed at an after-school tutoring program, and now some parents call it discrimination.
The principal at Mission Viejo Elementary in Aurora sent a letter telling parents the program is only for students of color. Parents CBS4 talked with said they were shocked to see, in this day and age, what they consider to be segregation.
