In a commencement address at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, President Barack Obama recalls Jim Crow laws and racism of the 40s and 50s. Morehouse College is a historically black college. [Read more...]
And at the moment, they appear to be in denial about it. Peter Beinart on an outrageous Democratic attack on Nikki Haley—and why Democrats need to strongly denounce it.
If Dick Harpootlian were a Republican, liberals would be jumping over one another to call him a bigot. In 2002 Harpootlian called Lindsey Graham, then running for a South Carolina Senate seat, “light in the loafers,” thus fueling a nasty whispering campaign about Graham’s sexual orientation. Last Friday he struck again, telling activists to “send Nikki Haley”—South Carolina’s Indian-American governor—“back to wherever the hell she came from.” [Read more...]
A week ago, I noted a smart essay in the AV Club on the fact that white film critics, afraid of being called “racist,” have long watered down their criticisms of Tyler Perry. The stakes in that case were relatively low: film criticism is, after all, just film criticism. Don’t get me wrong, I love dabbling in the form. If I had to write about politics all the time, I’d go insane (for reasons you’ll see tout de suite). In today’s New York Times, guest columnist Ta-Nehisi Coates launches what is only the latest and most pretentious attack against Dr. Ben Carson, arguing that he is a fraud–not because of what he is saying, but because white conservatives seem to like him. He “put on the mask,” Coates says, to help Republicans attack Obama. [Read more...]
Alabama Lawmaker’s email: ‘Slave-holding, Murdering, Adulterous, Baby-raping, Snaggle-toothed Kin Folk’
State Rep. Joe Mitchell, D-Mobile, had an outlandish exchange via email with a Jefferson County man who asked him and other lawmakers not to pass any laws that would restrict gun ownership.
Eddie Maxwell sent a mass email to state legislators at 10:54 p.m. on Jan. 27, warning them that even attempting to introduce a gun control bill was, in his opinion, a violation of state law. [Read more...]

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – A school principal said no white children were allowed at an after-school tutoring program, and now some parents call it discrimination.
The principal at Mission Viejo Elementary in Aurora sent a letter telling parents the program is only for students of color. Parents CBS4 talked with said they were shocked to see, in this day and age, what they consider to be segregation.
“I was infuriated. I didn’t understand why they would include or exclude certain groups,” said parent Nicole Cox, who is white. [video after page break] [Read more...]
